Choosing the right concealer and knowing how to use it can make all the difference in achieving your makeup goals. But when is liquid concealer vs cream concealer the right choice for providing the desired coverage and convenience for your makeup routine? See how to elevate your look to new heights and find the perfect concealer to unlease your true beauty potential.
What is Concealer and How to Use It
Concealer is a type of makeup used to camouflage or conceal. In addition to being used to hide skin imperfections like dark spots, scars, or blemishes, it can also help improve uneven skin tone and the overall appearance of your skin. Concealer is also a great way to hide dark circles under your eyes. Depending upon the type of concealer you use, it can either be used on its own. Or, in combination with foundation and other makeup.
Different Types of Concealers
Concealers come in different forms, including stick concealer, cream concealer, liquid concealer, and powder concealer. I will focus on liquid concealer vs cream concealer because they are the most versatile types of concealer. However, I'll briefly discuss the other types of concealers so that you can choose what's best for you.
Stick concealer is very convenient, but its thicker texture means it's less versatile than other concealers. Stick concealers are too harsh for sensitive skin in the under-eye area, so they're not the best type of concealer for dark circles. Stick formulas are better for covering dark spots or evening-out skin tone. Acne-prone skin and oily skin types do not mix well with stick concealers. So, if you're trying to cover acne, stick formulas may irritate flare-ups.
Powder concealers are popular with people who use mineral powder foundations. Powder concealer gives lighter coverage and is an easy way to lighten dark circles for people who want a more natural look, like a no-makeup makeup look. One of the problems with powder concealers is that they are not buildable. That means that if you need medium or full coverage, powder concealer won't work. You can't just add layer after layer of powder, hoping to camouflage what you want to hide. That's why a popular way to use powder concealer is as a setting powder for a liquid concealer applied underneath. It's an excellent way to get more coverage and a matte finish.
One downside of powder foundation is that it settles into fine lines and wrinkles, accentuating the appearance of fine lines. Powder concealer can also stick to dry patches, so it's not the best option for people with dry skin types.
Cream Concealer
There's a reason why cream concealer is popular with makeup artists. Cream formulas work well on all skin types but are particularly good with mature skin. The thicker consistency provides buildable coverage. That means that you can easily control the level of coverage you get with a cream concealer. The secret to getting a natural look and full coverage is to apply the concealer in thin layers. Building-up coverage naturally is one of the big pluses of using cream concealer. It lets you gradually go from light to medium coverage and all the way to full coverage if needed.
Because of its buildable coverage, cream concealer is a good choice for covering dark spots and dark circles. It's also a great option for defining specific areas of your face and contouring and highlighting features. For more information, you can check out my article about Using Concealer as a Highlighter.
Liquid Concealer
Liquid concealer is another go-to favorite for makeup artists and enthusiasts alike. One of the nice things about liquid concealer is that it's easy to apply. For many of us it's so easy to take the wand applicator and dot a bit of concealer where needed. Then gently tap it in place with your ring finger. Or use a concealer brush for a more precise application of the concealer. Using a brush helps you get a professional looking application. It allows you to apply the concealer with a light touch so that you get a natural look.
LimeLife Complete Waterproof Concealer
LimeLife Complete Concealer is a wax-based concealer created by the German cosmetics company Kryolan. The company developed it to help burn victims feel more comfortable. LimeLife rebranded and reformulated it to remove harsh chemicals and parabens. This high-coverage concealer can cover just about anything while making it look natural.
Here are some of the highlights that make the Complete Concealer a game-changer in the world of makeup.

- It can cover skin discolorations, blemishes, scars, and tattoos.
- With a wax-based formula, the Complete Concealer is water-resistant and long-wearing. It can withstand the hot summer heat and stand up to sweat. It will also stay in place when you're splashing in the pool.
- Available in 8 shades, and you can combine colors to customize the shade you need.
- Use it as a primer for eyeshadow and powders.

LimeLife Liquid Concealer
September 2024 is an exciting time at LimeLife. This was when the new Be Amazing Liquid Concealer launched, a product that had been in the making for a while and something that I personally had been hoping for. I love LimeLife's existing concealer, but I think that there is a time and a place for a liquid concealer, too. That's why makeup artists carry both in their makeup kits.
Here are the highlights of the Be Amazing Liquid Concealer:
- Is a buildable concealer that provides medium coverage.
- It is not waterproof and won't withstand swimming and moisture like LimeLife's Complete Concealer.
- It has a matte finish for a natural, radiant finish.
- It is designed to work with all skin types, and for mature and dry skin, it will not settle into fine lines and wrinkles.
- It is a clean makeup product with a 90% natural formula free from PEGs.
- Contains beneficial ingredients like caffeine and Niacinamide. These ingredients give the concealer a hydrating formula that prevents skin from losing water and helps to calm it. Caffeine is an antioxidant that helps firm skin and gives it a youthful appearance.
Choosing Liquid Concealer vs Cream Concealer
Finding the right concealer really comes down to personal preference and understanding your needs. Each type has benefits and choosing liquid concealer vs cream concealer will typically come down to how much coverage you need.
Liquid concealers are typically lightweight and provide a sheer to medium coverage, while cream concealers are thicker and offer a fuller coverage. If you need light to medium coverage a liquid concealer is a great choice. For fuller coverage when you need to camouflage scars, tattoos, or really dark under-eye circles, a cream concealer will deliver the best results.
No matter what type of concealer you choose, try to use as little as possible. Not only will this feel lighter and more comfortable on your skin, but it also gives you a more natural-looking finish. Concealers are one of the most important factors to showing off flawless-looking skin. Your skin may have imperfections, but with the right concealer and the right application, no one will ever know your secret.
